Disk Space Analysis Utility (Treesize Pro 5.0 vs FolderSizes 4.5)

Introduction

  • Treesize Pro 5.0
    • A standard applications for quite some time. I've been using this program for some years. Foldersizes appear to be it's most competetive opponent and even achieve better in some of the feature
  • FolderSizes
    1. A tight rival of Treesize Pro. Recently has started to caught my attention to this application to substitute Treesize

GUI(FolderSizes)
  • FolderSizes is much good looking than Treesize but the graphic generated by treesize was much appealing. The 3D Pie generated by foldersizes is terrible and difficult to visualized. However this can overcome by setting it to 2D view.
  • Treesize has a very bad GUI as too many features and data put on its main interface (Even though more handy information was provided compare with FolderSizes, some useless information will make confusion - delirium

Accessibility (FolderSizes)
  • FolderSizes - has much better and easy interface. Using FolderSizes was faster and more convenient than looking through all the menus in Treesize. Simply clicking on the left directory will generate the report. The files details and graph was able to visualized both together as compare with Treesize.
  • TreeSize - Treesize has the ability to browsing up and down the folder by simply clicking on the graph. This was not applicable to FolderSizes as you can't go up the level.

Features (Treesize may not significantly better than FolderSizes depending on individual preference)
  • The major functions of both applications are similiar. The ability to generate graphic representative of disk space distribution, search for special files (Duplicated, largest files, oldest files, temporary files, filetypes, user), export report. Treesize has a better report on filetypes on disc as it is better organized and meaningful sorting of filetypes.
  • Foldersizes - File extension browser (rather useless and unrelate feature). Able to generate report based on file size, attribute, file names (not really a useful feature too)
  • Treesize - Able to search internet files, Scheduler (Useless)
  • The main features were almost the same for both applications. Treesizes has a more meaning grouping and reporting than FolderSizes.

Performance (FolderSizes may not significantly better than Treesize)
  • Memory usage (FolderSizes)
    • Foldersizes - 7,500KB
    • Treesize - 13,644 KB
  • Application size (Foldersizes)
    • Folder sizes - 5.84 MB (6,131,712 bytes), 11 files
    • Treesize - 6.44 MB (6,778,880 bytes), 8 files
  • Application speed (Treesize)
    • Loading (FolderSizes) - Foldersizes has a more stable and faster loading than treesizes. However, this may not significant. The difference may be minimal.
    • Folder scanning (Treesize) - Treesize has a significant faster speed than foldersizes . This can easily goes up to 50% difference folder scanning time.
    • Other - FolderSizes has a significant faster scanning algorithm for dupplicated files.
  • System integration (Treesize)
    • Foldersizes - integrate to folder context menu (Many useless context exntension), built-in installer
    • Treesize - integrate to folder context menu, built-in installer

Error
  • Treesize will shows pie chart with each individual files. It will cause a chaos by generating a pie chart with thousand of files but FolderSisez can exclude files which are smaller and only take few most representative. This can provide more representative than simply shows everything but useless.

Special note
  • Both the applications able to access to protected OS files such as "System Volume Information" and have ability to modify the contents within

Summary
  • For the aim as a "Disk Space Analysis Utility", BOTH HAS ACHIEVE what we want to know, where is our disk space go, which files are largest, oldest, where to provide a zip for multiple small files when disk space was no efficiently used.
  • FolderSizes is really astonish me for it much better GUI and accessibility. The only major drawback i found was the slower disk scanning speed. I would said i prefer to use FolderSizes as overall better accessibilty and easier to use

Improvement
  • Both applications should try to improve the directory browsing
